I might recommend you either trying Gimp, or Photoshop Elements. I now use Photoshop CS3, and it is 100x better software. It seems to be very limited on JPEG files, or maybe I'm still in the dumb stage of using it. I just recently purchased my first SLT, a Sony A57, it came with editing software, Image Data Converter.

Over the years I have downloaded free photo editing programs or tried free programs that come with various cameras, but I've never found one I like as well as PD3. Occasionally I create a collage, or a poster with text. I can quickly create an 8x10 or 10x8 with 72 dpi for emailing or web posting, and quickly rename the file to be stored in the same folder as the original file. I use PD3 simply to resize and reduce resolution for web posting. Why do I like PD3 so much? I don't do a lot of editing of photos to change their quality or be creative. A reduced resolution 8x10 fits nicely on the screen inside an email and doesn't bog down the downloading process. Her dial-up internet connection needs as few Kb as possible.

If the picture doesn't magically appear, she doesn't know how to open it. I prefer to resize the picture to fit on the screen inside the email because my elderly mother needs everything about email to be simple or she gets confused. If I email the original, it is a huge file in Kb, and it is too big for the screen inside the email, unless the receiver opens it in a picture viewer. I returned to the original, and resized to 10x8 AND reduced the resolution for web viewing and it changed to 107Kb (much better size-wise than 918Kb). I resized it to 10"x8", but retained the resolution, and it's size changed to 918Kb. A certain picture came off my camera as 6720Kb and was 68"x45". So you may be able to cut out a step or two in your processing. Similarly if the images you email are only viewed on screen the size and dpi stuff doesn't matter.

For web use the 72dpi and 10x8 things are meaningless as only the number of pixels matters. You mention creating particular sizes and printing densities for emailing and web use. My wish-list of camera accessories is already draining my funds.

I need software that is definitely consumer level, and not high cost.

My question is, what is similar to PD3? And if there is something similar, can I try it on a trial basis? I'm just a beginner to DSLR, I'm hoping to get into RAW photo creation and then I will need software to deal with that. It seems to be very limited on JPEG files, or maybe I'm still in the dumb stage of using it. Why do I like PD3 so much? I don't do a lot of editing of photos to change their quality or be creative.

My worry is that some day my computer will croak and I will be forced into the Windows future and my precious PD3 probably won't work on the new computer. Yes I know I'm living in the past, but it's a comfortable, non-frustrating past. Please don't laugh at me, but I'm still using PD3, and I'm still using Windows XP.
